Dental Crown
Lakeland, FL

A woman with dental crowns smiling at Thomas Plunkett, DMD in Lakeland, FLOne of the most commonly used preventative and restorative dental devices today are crowns. They serve a number of functions for those who are looking for something to address specific issues. They are also a highly diverse appliance which can correct or improve several different aspects of a patient’s care all at the same time. At our dental offices here at Thomas Plunkett, DMD, we provide placement treatments for crowns and many other devices which are used in this type of general care.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Crowns are small caps which are designed to cover and seal a natural tooth while also providing increased strength and support. There are two main types of dental crowns; regular and CEREC. Both have advantages and disadvantages. We recommend that you speak with our dentist before beginning the procedure to find out which one would be best for you.

Among the differences, regular crowns are sent out to a lab to be fabricated based on scans and molds provided by the dentist. The process can take somewhere around two to three weeks. Although it takes a little longer, the custom fit and comfort is certainly worth the wait.

CEREC crowns, on the other hand, are oftentimes available the same day as they are manufactured in-office based on digital imagery and computer technology. With this method you get your permanent crown much faster, and more conveniently, although the fit may not be as customized as with those which are sent out to the lab.

What They Help With

Crowns are used to treat a number of conditions concerning individual or multiple teeth. For example, a tooth which is decayed or has undergone root canal treatment will usually have less strength and stability than those around it. To help not only increase the strength but also to prevent further issues, the crown is placed over the tooth, sealing off any further damage or decay which may come.

In addition to functional aspects, crowns also help with appearance, shape, size, length, and most other visual qualities of the tooth or teeth as well. They can be molded and shaded to blend perfectly with your existing teeth.

What to Expect From the Procedure

With normal crown procedures, it is usually a two-step process. The first visit will include the examination, as well as preparing the tooth for the placement of the temporary crown which will happen that same day. This includes scraping away and cleaning any decay or debris which will interfere with the crown sitting properly on the tooth.

The second visit will be when the crown has returned from fabrication and is ready to be installed in the patients’ mouth. It involves shaping and preparing the tooth to the proper size. After that is accomplished, the tooth will then have a thin layer of enamel removed and its surface roughened up slightly to make the bonding application easier. CEREC crown procedures are virtually the same but usually take place in one visit instead.

No matter what type of crown you intend to have placed, our dental experts here at Thomas Plunkett, DMD will be able to sit down with you and discuss all of your options and what may work best for your situation.
