Restorative DentistryTooth decay can prove to be a serious dental health concern for both children and adults. Restoration treatments are designed to restore the health of the tooth. At Thomas Plunkett, DMD we provide our patients with the restorative dental treatments that ensure the best in continued oral health for the patient. Restorative treatments could include dental dental fillings, dental dental crowns, and the procedure known as a frenectomy. dental bridges and dental implants also fall under restorative dentistry. Treating Cavities And Tooth DecayOne of the most common teeth restorations, especially in children, is the treatment of cavities. If damage to a tooth from an injury or a cavity is not treated in a timely manner, it can result in a number of concerns. Cavities in baby teeth can lead to infections that spread into the roots of the tooth, and down into the developing adult teeth. Infections can also spread into the bloodstream if left untreated. The sooner that a cavity can be treated, the better the prognosis is for the tooth. This is why we strongly encourage our patients to get a routine checkup and professional cleaning every six months. These appointments allow our dentist to identify the concerns in their earliest stages so that a treatment plan can be quickly put into action. A dental filling can treat the cavity and restore stability and health to the tooth. Teeth that have more advanced damage or decay may require the protection of a dental crown. A dental crown can be used on both damaged baby teeth and permanent teeth. Extractions of TeethThere are some cases where it may be necessary to extract teeth. Both baby and adult teeth could need to be surgically removed, for several reasons. Teeth that are displaying signs of decay will have to be extracted if it is not possible to restore the tooth by a filling or with root canal therapy and a dental crown. Teeth that have not fully erupted, known as impaction, may need to be removed to avoid concerns with decay or to make space for orthodontic solutions. While tooth extraction may sound scary, they are very straightforward procedures, for patients of all ages. There are a number of safe sedation methods that will help to ensure that the entire procedure is comfortable for the patient. The Frenectomy ProcedureMany parents have never heard of the frenectomy procedure until their children are diagnosed as being tongue-tied. Babies and toddlers who are tongue-tied could struggle with nursing or feeding with a bottle, they could be fussy and struggle to gain weight. If one of the frena inside of the mouth is abnormal, this can become the reality for the little one. This condition is not always diagnosed when children are babies. If not corrected, the condition can result in the development of speech issues. For patients who can benefit from a routine frenectomy, it can be performed in the office. The patient will be made to feel comfortable so that pain is minimized for the duration of the procedure. The procedure should take no more than 15 minutes. Recovery can take up to two weeks, with complications being incredibly rare occurrences.
