 For many, many years, a root canal procedure was one of the more unpleasant experiences a patient would normally have to go through at the dentists’ office. However, just as with every other medical procedure in practice, over time and with research, the process has become much easier and more efficient.

What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal needs to be performed whenever the root canal is infected and causing issues with the teeth and gums. There is a layer inside the tooth itself, between the enamel and the hard layer known as dentin, which is filled with soft tissue, connective tissues, nerves and blood vessels. That soft tissue is known as pulp and when it becomes infected, it must be removed.
How the Procedure Works
Although this is a very serious restorative dentistry procedure, it is also one which our professionals perform regularly. Basically, the process entails cleaning out the root canal and removing the bacteria which is causing the infection in the first place. The dentist will carefully remove the infected pulp from the tooth, and then clean, disinfect, as well as shape the root canal to get it ready for the upcoming filling which will be used to seal off the space and prevent further infection or damage.
Signs That You May Need One
There are several warning signs that may indicate it is time for you to look into the possibility that you might need a root canal. These include such things as difficulty biting or chewing, a cracked or chipped tooth, pimples or sores on your gums, high sensitivity to cold and hot sensations which linger even after you have removed the stimulant, as well as swollen or tender gums.

What To Expect After Treatment
Once the tooth and the surrounding area have been properly treated, the dentist will usually place a crown over it to protect it from further damage while also increasing its strength and appearance. After this is completed and you are fully healed from the procedure, you should be able to look forward to enjoying daily life and activities just as you did before the problem developed. This includes such tasks as chewing and biting hard foods, enjoying hot and cold beverages or food, as well as having normal bite strength again.
